You Know Enough to Know There’s More You Can Do

You’re doing a lot of things right! You’ve got a plan that you’ve been working on, but chances are that there’s some pain in getting things fully optimized for your goals. In short, things feel incomplete and you’re increasingly aware of it. Let’s fix that.

The first thing you should do is interrogate your relationship with your financial advisor. Are you working with a trusted partner who has your best interest in mind? Many claim they do, but their main job is to put you into as many of their firm’s investment products as possible. If you’re getting pitched on a new angle every time you meet, or if you think the plan is too vanilla for your goals, you are probably right and it might be time to switch advisors.

The next challenge is being completely honest with yourself about what you don’t know. Perhaps you’ve got the broad strokes for your plan understood, but do you know how each aspect works together to serve your retirement needs? If you’re aware of asset classes, which ones hold your money at the moment? What investments are going to be able to supplement your income so that you can live free in retirement? How are you going to make the most of your social security benefits? Even though you have made all of these elements part of your plan, it’s time to dig deeper and educate yourself so that you and your advisor can have productive conversations about your future rather than passively being told how to invest.

Anthony Saccaro has shepherded thousands of clients to the retirements they deserved.
